As a single woman, how can I stay safe in my home?

The following steps should be followed by anyone living alone.

  • Be sure windows and doors are properly secured and draw shades to discourage "Peeping Toms".
  • Should you return home to find windows and doors tampered with, DO NOT ENTER, OR CALL OUT. Go to a neighbour and call the Police.
  • Avoid feminine identification. Change the mailbox tag and telephone listing from "Mary Smith" to "M. Smith.
  • Unknown persons should not be admitted to your premises unless proper credentials are presented.
  • Should a stranger request use of your phone do not allow him to enter. Offer to summons assistance or make the call for him.
  • Install a lookout eye piece in a solid door, equipped with a good dead bolt lock.
  • Never remain alone in an apartment laundry room, mail room or parking garage.
  • Install a door chime on your outside doors to alert you to anyone entering the premises.
